Use Rug Colors to Create Balance in your
Home Decor

The use of color in your home is all about the stability resulting from the equalization of opposing forces. That is to say that all things must be done in a balanced way. This includes your choices of color and uses of color in your home design.

A popular term that is being used for balancing elements in your home is Feng Shui. So-called Feng Shui masters will come into a home or office and analyze the harmony of the layout, furnishings and functions. This is actually an ancient Chinese philosophy of nature. But it is being used rather loosely in western culture and some have given it status as to include home design elements.

Although I am not a follower of such a philosophy, I do believe very strongly that all elements in your home must harmonize for true beauty to be established. Bringing a balanced approach to color in your home is not as complex as some would have you believe. We have some tools to choose colors and color schemes on our web site but my thoughts today are restricted to balancing your colors in home design. As an example of what not to do, I am thoughtful of an experience my neighbor had when re-painting the exterior of her home. She has a fondness for lavender, so she set about painting her home with what she thought would be a lavender color. Her house immediately became a point of reference. People would say things like, “I live three houses away from the purple house”. It does not end there either. She proceeded to paint the trim of her home with her other favorite color which was orange. Needless to say, orange and purple do not harmonize especially on the exterior of a house.

The odd thing about color is the fact that she could have painted in those same colors but in a different tone or depth of color and it would have worked just fine. That is why it is efficient to use a color-wheel or color palette software to choose which colors harmonize before you commit yourself to the colors you choose.

In her case, more lavender and less purple and a tone of orange that tended more toward yellow would have worked out; without all the embarrassment. We can use these same principles when choosing an area rug color. Though it is always best to choose your rug first and work from those colors that are in the rug, most people tend to do things backwards and this is okay as long as you incorporate harmony in color when you make your final decision. Area rugs are very versatile design elements in that they come in all shapes, sizes and colors.

There are usually several colors in each rug so I suggest that if you choose a rug with a lot of intricate design work in it, that you look past the design to the base color of the rug. All area rugs have a base color no matter how intricate the design is and this will be your primary color. You should harmonize other furnishings and décor around that primary color. Use the color tools I mentioned before and either blend and harmonize the furnishings to the rug or the rug to the furnishings.

If the rug is added as a design element after the fact, or after you have already decorated the room, it may be necessary to re-paint your walls and trim or add new window coverings, but these are easy and inexpensive solutions to achieving balance or harmony to your home design.

Remember that color is the most important tool in your design arsenal to set the mood for your room and sometimes all that is needed is just the right rug in the right color to finish off that mood. Whether you are going for bright and modern, or sultry and sexy, or subdued and traditional, an area rug in the perfect colors is always a welcome addition to jazz up your home design.

You can always find an exclusive selection of quality discounted area rugs on our web site awaiting your perusal or if you have any questions, ideas or tips, you can log into our forum area or email me directly with any flooring design question and I will be happy to give you my best guess (oops, I meant to say answer). Anyway here’s to your happiness in decorating your slice of the American dream.
