GREEN (Recycled) Carpet Fiber Facts:
With all the hype and marketing efforts toward the “Greening” of the flooring industry, not to mention California’s new Carpet Reclamation and Recovery fee (5 cents per square yard) that went into effect on July 1st of 2011, you might think that recycled carpet is a fairly new choice in flooring… however, recycled carpet fiber has been around for quite a number of years now.
Recycled carpet yarn made of Polyethylene Terephthalate or P.E.T., has been available for over fifteen years. PET has a proven track record as a durable, highly cleanable and economical fiber choice for the budget minded home decorator. In fact, many PET fiber carpets have lifetime stain warranties for common household stains… and recently added a few uncommon stain sources as well… like pet stains. This kind of warranty was unheard of before the advent of PET carpets and more advanced stain protectors.
PET Carpet Yarn is recycled from food-grade plastic and is often referred to as “Pop-Bottle Carpet”, since all soda pop products are required to use food-grade PET. Also… due to the fact that there is No Breakdown in the chemical composition of PET plastic, when recycled into other products, it is a very intelligent choice for flooring applications (imagine trying to stain and destroy a one liter soda bottle and you get an idea just how tough this stuff can be).
(Nylon fiber carpet has been the mainstay of synthetic yarns since the 1950’s and yet, recycling nylon carpet has only recently been given serious consideration, due to the high costs associated with such an endeavor… it is this authors opinion that recycled PET products currently offer a heartier carpet fiber at a better price point than traditional Nylon yarn).
What does Wear-Dated mean?
Wear-Dated ® is the brand equivalent to Stainmaster® and Anso 4®. The Wear-Dated brand was fairly recently obtained by Mohawk. The best attributes of Wear-Dated Carpet Fibers is their Durability and Stain Protection. Mohawk’s Wear-Dated PET Carpets are Softer, Cleaner and Last Longer than previous yarn and fiber choices. Soft Fiber technology has been available for higher end carpets for a while now… Mohawk has taken this technology to a new level by offering it in their more budget friendly products.
Why does it Cost Less?
Plain and Simple… Mohawk’s new Wear-Dated PET carpet is less expensive because you are Not having to pay for the Heavy Marketing Costs associated with Stainmaster and Anso 4 Carpet Fiber. Corporations, such as Stainmaster, do a lot of marketing and advertising for their brand. But this presents a problem for the consumer. Although most consumers are very familiar with the Stainmaster and Anso brands… they are also paying roughly $3 to $6 a square yard extra (that’s .33 to .67 cents per square foot)… in order to cover the costs of these broad marketing and advertising techniques, and these costs can add up fast when you are buying more than just a single room of carpet.
Although Wear-Dated is also a nationally recognized brand, Mohawk intends on keeping consumer costs more affordable, by allowing local dealers to inform customers and clients on the benefits of the Wear-Dated Brand.
